In the sebaceous glands of the skin, sebum is produced to help keep the skin moisturized. When this oil combines with dead skin cells, it can clog the hair follicles. If the clogged pore remains closed, it results in a whitehead; if it is open to the air, oxidation occurs, causing the surface to darken, which is known as a blackhead.
